Reckoning 03:48

It is Well 03:56

V1: If you were me If you were like me If your skin had the same coloring Do you know what you would do? Would your truth still be true When you saw your blood in the street? V2: If I were you If I were like you If my eyes were the same shade of blue Would I ever wonder why The mothers scream and cry Over children dying in the street? Ch: Am I just a caption and a photograph An epitaph Not even human Turn the page so you don’t have to see Thank your God you weren’t born like me V3: I am you I am like you Are you afraid of the truth? Do you ever wonder why My mother screams and cries While my blood is running in the street Ch: Am I just a caption and a photograph An epitaph Not even human Turn the page so you don’t have to see Thank your God you weren’t born like me V3: And I am you I am like you Are you afraid of the truth? Do you ever wonder why My mother screams and cries While my blood is running in the street Outro: We got to keep on trying People keep on dying You can’t hide the blood in the streets

Verse 1: I am a poor wayfaring stranger Traveling through this world of woe There's no sickness toil nor danger In that bright world to which I go Chorus 1: I was lost and then they found me Wandering on this golden shore Prison bars are all around me Shackled here on heaven’s door Verse 2: I know dark clouds will gather round me I know the way is rough and steep Beauteous fields rise before me Where God’s redeemed Are fast asleep Chorus 2: When I cried could they not hear me? Could they never lend a hand? Over Jordan is our hell now Orphans in the Promised Land Solo Chorus 3: When I cried could they not hear me? Could they never take a stand? Over Jordan is our hell now Orphans in the Promised Land Verse 3: I was naked, did you clothe me? Mighty city on a hill In my hunger did you feed me? Ease my pain when I was ill? In this prison did you meet me? Did you make for me a home? Turn your back upon a stranger And you too may one day roam Outro: In this prison did you meet me? Did you make for me a home? Turn your back upon a stranger Then you too may one day roam

I love to write songs that take an unexpected angle: the untold story, the unsung hero. I like to challenge clichés, symbols, and assumptions by turning them on their head, often employing paradox to take the listener beyond their own reality. The rich music that surrounded me as I grew up in Chicago has seeped into every facet of who I am as an artist. I hope those roots revival, folk, blues, and Americana influences render songs more familiar and accessible- creating a comfortable space, like a well-worn easy chair.

That's the music I like to make.

The Empathy Project is another step on this journey. This 8-song EP takes me out of my own shoes and let me walk around form many different points of view- as pathways to understanding.

It all started with a song that I wrote for my daughter after she came out a couple years back. I tried to imagine how the world looked to her- what it was like to walk in her shoes. And then I found myself writing a song from Freddie Gray's point of view- what he might say to my Grandfather who was also named Freddie, who was a racist and (ironically) mixed race.

And then I started thinking about other shoes to walk around in. Sometimes the songs were inspired by friends, or people in media. Sometimes I was putting on shoes from other seasons in my life. Finding greater understanding of myself.

The message of my music is this; look beyond appearance. Leave room for wonder. Close your eyes and see the music all around. Choose questions over answers. Truth, however raw or uncomfortable, is beautiful.

Hope takes root in darkness. Believe me, I know.

I dedicate "Slam on the Brakes" to Tara Tetrault, and the Humanities & Women's Studies Departments of Montgomery College, Takoma Park, Maryland. Every year we host concerts on campus and hold conversations around the topic of Domestic Violence & Teen Dating Violence. As a survivor of DV & IPV it is so healing to advocate on behalf of the next generation. Thank you for the opportunity, MC.

The Empathy Project: 8 song original extended play (EP) musical recording exploring empathy in a divided culture
